What a hygiene visit does

What our Harlow hygienists treat

A hygiene visit is more than a polish. It clears the plaque and hardened tartar a toothbrush cannot reach, treats early gum disease before it costs you teeth, and leaves your mouth feeling genuinely clean.

A scale and polish with a hygienist in Harlow

A routine scale and polish

We remove the soft plaque and hardened tartar that build up along the gumline and between teeth, even with good brushing at home. A polish then lifts surface stain and leaves the teeth smooth, so plaque clings less easily afterwards.

For most people a regular hygiene visit is the single best thing they can do to keep teeth and gums healthy for life.

Airflow stain removal at a Harlow hygiene visit

Stain removal with Airflow

Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco leave stubborn stains that a standard polish struggles with. Airflow uses a fine jet of water, air and powder to lift them gently, reaching between teeth and around the gumline.

It is a quick, comfortable way to freshen a dull smile, with no whitening gel involved.

Treating bleeding gums and gingivitis in Harlow

Bleeding or sore gums

Gums that bleed when you brush are the first sign of gingivitis, the early and reversible stage of gum disease. A thorough clean, plus some tailored advice, usually settles it once the trigger is removed and your home care improves.

Caught at this stage it costs you a hygiene visit; left alone it can progress to something far harder to treat.

Deep cleaning for gum disease at a Harlow hygienist

Deep cleaning for gum disease

When gum disease has advanced to periodontitis, the gum pockets deepen and the bone that holds the teeth starts to recede. We treat it with root surface debridement, a deep clean below the gumline, then keep it stable with regular maintenance visits.

It cannot rebuild bone that is already lost, but it halts the disease and protects the teeth you still have.

Wondering if it's worth it?

More than a clean feeling

A hygiene visit removes the hardened tartar no toothbrush can shift and catches gum disease while it is still reversible, which is what keeps you away from fillings, gum recession and lost teeth later on. It is usually comfortable, and if your gums are tender we can numb the area first. You do not need a referral or to be a registered patient with us, you can book straight in with the hygienist.

Patient reviews

What our patients say

Dr Syed and his assistant were absolutely fantastic to myself and my daughter this morning. Very kind, gentle and soothing considering I am a nervous wreck about dentist appointments. It was my daughter's first appointment and they were great with her. Lovely team!

Shannon J. · Google review

There's no other dentist like this one. I've never liked the dentists, but what a world of difference Church Langley is. Everyone is wonderful, kind, caring, and not judgemental in any way.

Aidan R. · Google review

Been going for about a year and a bit and I've only got good things to say. Easy to sign up when we moved into the area, and I got in through a cancellation within a few weeks.

What it coversHow hygiene runs across our two Harlow practices

A dental hygienist is a separately GDC-registered dental care professional whose remit is preventive periodontal care: detecting and treating gum disease at the earliest stage, removing the plaque and calculus that home brushing can't reach, and coaching the technique that maintains the result between visits. Hygienists work alongside the dentist (who handles examinations, restorations and any surgical work) rather than replacing them, so most patients see the hygienist in between dentist check-ups, not instead of them.

Hygiene in Harlow is built around two sites that operate as one. Nuffield runs weekday clinics; Church Langley runs weekday hygiene clinics too. Both practices run the same periodontal protocol, so a maintenance visit can be at whichever Harlow practice fits your week.

  • Scale and polish: ultrasonic and hand instrumentation to clear supragingival calculus and stain, then a prophy-paste polish, delivered to the same protocol whichever Harlow practice you book.
  • Root surface debridement (RSD): quadrant-by-quadrant under local anaesthetic for any 4 to 6mm pocket; one quadrant can be completed at one Harlow site and the next at the other, whichever fits your week.
  • Periodontitis staging & recall cadence: active disease moves to three-monthly recall until BOP and pocket depths stabilise, then steps back to six-monthly maintenance, with the recall interval reviewed at every visit per British Society of Periodontology staging guidance.
  • Peri-implant maintenance: Minti places implants at both Harlow sites, so titanium-safe scaler tips, peri-implant probing depths and yearly bone-loss review are part of the routine hygiene visit for any implant-bearing patient, not a separate appointment.
  • Same protocol at both Harlow sites: BPE scoring, six-point pocket charting and recall intervals follow the same British Society of Periodontology framework at Nuffield and Church Langley, so the standard of your hygiene care doesn't change between sites.
Common questions

Harlow hygiene FAQs

Can I get a Saturday hygiene slot at Church Langley?

No. Church Langley doesn't run Saturday hygiene sessions; hygiene visits are weekday appointments at both Harlow practices. Call the practice for the next available slot.

I bleed when I brush around my CM17 postcode, is it the water?

No, water hardness doesn't cause bleeding gums. Bleeding when you brush is the earliest sign of gingivitis or periodontitis; a hygiene visit removes the calculus your brush can't reach and tells you exactly which surfaces are inflamed.

Is root surface debridement painful?

It's done under local anaesthetic, so the cleaning itself is comfortable. Most patients describe the next day as similar to mild bruising; sensitivity usually settles inside a week, and any persistent issue is reviewed at your next maintenance visit.

How often should I come in?

Every six months for stable gums, every three to four months during active periodontal therapy or while we settle a high bleeding score. The interval is set per visit on your BOP and risk, never a fixed default.

Can I switch between Nuffield and Church Langley between visits?

Yes. Both Harlow practices run the same periodontal protocol, so a maintenance appointment can be at whichever one fits your week.
