Same-day emergency dentist in Harlow
Urgent capacity held back at both Harlow practices each morning, with weekend cover at Church Langley for Saturday breakages.
Dental emergencies we see same-day in Harlow
If you are in pain, swollen, or have broken or lost a tooth, call as early in the day as you can. We hold same-working-day emergency slots at both Harlow practices and triage you ahead of routine bookings.

Severe toothache
A throbbing ache that keeps you awake, or that painkillers no longer touch, usually means the nerve is inflamed or infected. We get you out of pain first, then deal with the cause.
Leaving it rarely settles on its own and often turns into an abscess, so the sooner we see you, the simpler the fix.

A broken or chipped tooth
A broken, cracked or chipped tooth can be sharp, sensitive to cold, or simply not look right. We smooth or rebuild it the same day and check whether the crack runs deep enough to need more.
Keep any pieces if you can, and try not to chew on that side until we have seen you.

A knocked-out tooth
A knocked-out adult tooth is a genuine emergency, and the sooner it is back in place, the better the chance of saving it. Hold it by the crown, not the root, and keep it in milk or tucked inside your cheek on the way to us.
Phone straight away rather than waiting for an appointment, so we can have a chair ready when you arrive.

A lost filling or crown
A filling or crown that has come out leaves the tooth sensitive and easy to damage further. We can usually re-cement a crown or place a new filling the same day.
Keep the crown if you still have it and bring it along, as refitting your own is often quicker than making a new one.

Swelling or a dental abscess
Facial swelling, a bad taste, or a gum boil point to a dental abscess, an infection that needs treating quickly rather than waiting out. We treat the source and settle the infection.
Swelling that is spreading towards your eye or making it hard to swallow needs same-day care, so call us, or if it is severe use NHS 111.
Call first and we'll fit you in
The quickest way to be seen is to ring the practice as early in the day as you can, rather than book online, so reception can triage you and hold the right length of slot. Tell us what is happening, when it started, and where it hurts. If it is out of hours or you cannot reach us and the pain or swelling is severe, NHS 111 will direct you to urgent dental care. For a knocked-out adult tooth, do not wait for an appointment, phone straight away.
Book an urgent appointmentWhat our patients say
Dr Syed and his assistant were absolutely fantastic to myself and my daughter this morning. Very kind, gentle and soothing considering I am a nervous wreck about dentist appointments. It was my daughter's first appointment and they were great with her. Lovely team!
There's no other dentist like this one. I've never liked the dentists, but what a world of difference Church Langley is. Everyone is wonderful, kind, caring, and not judgemental in any way.
Been going for about a year and a bit and I've only got good things to say. Easy to sign up when we moved into the area, and I got in through a cancellation within a few weeks.
Clear pricing, in writing
Every quote is itemised and given to you in writing before treatment begins, with no surprise charges, nothing added at the chair, and no obligation to go ahead. NHS and private options sit side by side. The full fee schedule is on our fees and finance page.

What it coversHow urgent slots run across our two Harlow practices
Emergency capacity is held back from the routine book at both Harlow sites every morning. Reception triages by phone, then directs you to whichever practice has the soonest chair: Nuffield weekdays, Church Langley including Saturdays. The practice you're registered at isn't always the practice that sees you, which is the point of running two sites within four miles of each other.
- Same-working-day slot at either site: two urgent diaries means you're offered the soonest of the two slots rather than waiting for a chair at the practice you happen to be registered with.
- Saturday weekend cover at Church Langley: a dedicated Saturday urgent session at Church Langley means a Saturday-morning toothache or trauma doesn't sit until Monday; Nuffield is weekday-only for emergencies.
- Dental abscess & facial swelling: drainage through the tooth or by incision the same visit; antibiotics added only where spread of infection is documented, per FGDP antimicrobial stewardship. Airway-threatening swelling is escalated directly to Princess Alexandra Hospital A&E rather than chair-side managed.
- Avulsed tooth (knocked-out adult tooth): reimplantation within the hour gives the best long-term survival. Sports trauma from Old Harlow rugby grounds or A414-corridor cycling falls are common; call from pitch-side or roadside, transport in milk or saliva (never tap water) and the chair stays held until you arrive.
- Same urgent protocol at either site: both Harlow practices triage and treat to the same emergency pathway, so you're offered the soonest chair without a difference in how you're assessed.
- Princess Alexandra Hospital onward pathway: facial fractures, dento-alveolar trauma with displacement, or any presentation requiring oral & maxillofacial input is referred direct to PAH OMFS with a written same-day handover, not bounced back through NHS 111 re-triage.
Harlow emergency FAQs
Do you take NHS 111 emergency referrals from CM17 the same day?
Yes. NHS 111 dental triage sends urgent referrals through and we slot them into the day's urgent book at whichever of Nuffield or Church Langley has the soonest space. Call ahead on the number 111 gives you so reception can prepare.
I knocked a tooth out playing rugby in Old Harlow, what do I do right now?
Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it briefly in milk (never tap water) and slot it back into the socket if you can. Otherwise keep it in a cup of milk or hold it inside your cheek, then ring Nuffield on 01279 424 038 immediately. Replanting within the hour gives the best survival.
Can I get a Saturday emergency slot in Harlow?
Yes. Church Langley runs Saturday sessions for exactly this reason. Call 01279 306 690 first thing; Nuffield is Monday to Friday only, but its weekday urgent slots are larger.
My face is swollen on one side, do I go to A&E?
If the swelling is affecting your breathing, your eye or extends into your throat, treat it as a medical emergency: A&E or 999. Otherwise call the practice immediately, we'll drain the abscess and start antibiotics where indicated; spreading dental infections are managed faster in primary care than in A&E.
A crown fell out, is that an emergency?
Only if the underlying tooth is painful, sharp, or the crown was on a front tooth visible when you smile. If the tooth is sound and the crown intact, store it in a sealable bag and book the next routine slot; we'll re-cement on the day. If it's painful or compromising your bite, call for a same-day appointment.
