NHS & private dental check-ups in Harlow
Routine examinations run to the same protocol across both Harlow sites, so you can book whichever practice suits your week.
What a Harlow check-up actually covers
A check-up at Minti is a full diagnostic appointment, not a glance in the mouth. The same examination runs whether you come on the NHS or privately; what changes is the appointment length and how soon you are seen.

A full examination of every tooth
We check each tooth for decay, cracks, wear and the condition of any existing fillings and crowns, so small problems are found while they are still small and simple to fix.
That is the whole point of a routine exam: catching things early, before they turn into pain or a root canal.

A gum health check
A quick BPE score measures the health of your gums and flags the early signs of gum disease, often before you would notice anything yourself. If it shows something, we send you straight to the hygienist.
Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it is almost always painless until it is advanced.

An oral cancer screening
Every routine exam includes a soft-tissue check of your tongue, cheeks, the floor of your mouth and your throat. It takes a minute and is one of the most valuable parts of the visit.
Mouth cancer is very treatable when it is caught early, which is exactly what a regular check-up is for.

X-rays, only when needed
Bitewing X-rays show decay hiding between teeth and under existing fillings, where the eye cannot reach. We take them only when they are clinically useful, never automatically at every visit.
The images are low-dose digital, and we talk you through anything they show.
As often as your mouth needs, no more
There is no rule that everyone needs a check-up every six months. We set your recall to your own risk, in line with national NICE guidance: a healthy mouth may safely go longer between visits, while a higher-risk one is seen more often. You get an honest interval based on what we actually find, not a default booked for the sake of it.
Book a Harlow check-upWhat our patients say
Dr Syed and his assistant were absolutely fantastic to myself and my daughter this morning. Very kind, gentle and soothing considering I am a nervous wreck about dentist appointments. It was my daughter's first appointment and they were great with her. Lovely team!
There's no other dentist like this one. I've never liked the dentists, but what a world of difference Church Langley is. Everyone is wonderful, kind, caring, and not judgemental in any way.
Been going for about a year and a bit and I've only got good things to say. Easy to sign up when we moved into the area, and I got in through a cancellation within a few weeks.
Clear pricing, in writing
Every quote is itemised and given to you in writing before treatment begins, with no surprise charges, nothing added at the chair, and no obligation to go ahead. NHS and private options sit side by side. The full fee schedule is on our fees and finance page.

What it coversWhat a Minti Harlow dental check-up actually includes
A routine dental examination at our Harlow practices is a full diagnostic appointment, not a glance in the mouth. Whether you're seen at Nuffield or Church Langley, the same protocol applies at both sites.
- Comprehensive oral examination — tooth-by-tooth visual and tactile check for caries, wear, fractures and existing restorations.
- Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) — sextant scoring of gum pocket depths to triage your risk of gum disease, in line with British Society of Periodontology guidance.
- Oral cancer screening — extra-oral palpation of lymph nodes and TMJ, intra-oral inspection of tongue, floor of mouth and soft palate.
- Bitewing radiographs when clinically indicated — typically every 18 to 24 months to detect interproximal caries before it reaches the nerve.
- Bite analysis & occlusal check — for signs of bruxism, parafunction or restorative imbalance.
- Written FP17DC treatment plan (NHS) or itemised private equivalent, with costs confirmed before any treatment begins.
- Recall interval set per NICE CG19 — risk-based, three to 24 months, never a fixed six-month default.
Harlow check-up FAQs
Are you accepting new NHS patients from Harlow right now?
NHS availability shifts week to week. Call the practice nearest you — Nuffield (01279 424 038) or Church Langley (01279 306 690) — and reception will tell you exactly what's open on the NHS that day, plus the next available private slot if NHS lists are paused.
I haven't seen a dentist in five years — can I still register?
Yes, and you're not alone — about a third of new registrations at our Harlow practices haven't been seen in three years or more. The first appointment is a chat and examination, no judgement, with a phased plan if there's work to catch up on.
Do you take walk-ins for routine examinations?
Routine check-ups are by appointment only so we hold the right slot length. Emergency walk-ins for pain are different — see our Harlow emergency dentist page.
How is my recall interval set after the appointment?
We follow NICE CG19: risk-based, anywhere from three months (high-risk) to 24 months (low-risk adult). The interval is reviewed at every visit, not fixed by default.
