Dental implants

The closest dentistry comes to growing a tooth back: a titanium root healed into the jaw, finished with a crown that looks, bites, and lasts like the real thing.

What it is

Why a missing tooth is worth replacing

A gap is more than cosmetic. Left alone it changes your bite, lets the teeth either side drift, and quietly thins the jaw bone. An implant is the one fix that replaces the root, not just the part you can see.
  • Eat normally again

A settled implant carries the same biting force as a natural tooth, so the foods you have been avoiding come back on the menu.

  • Keep your face shape

Replacing the root, not just the crown, stops the jaw bone shrinking where the tooth was lost and holds the line of your face.

  • Built to last decades

Well placed and looked after, implants routinely pass 20 years, with 90 to 95% still going strong at 15 in the research.

Straight talk

When an implant isn't the right answer

We don't recommend implants for every gap. A bridge is faster with no surgery; dentures cost less across several missing teeth. The Oral Health Foundation has an independent guide if you want neutral background.

Questions

Implant FAQs

Does the placement hurt?

It is painless under local anaesthetic, you feel pressure not pain. Afterwards most people compare it to a tooth extraction, settling over three to five days.

How long does it take?

It depends on your case and is set out in your written plan. The fixture needs time to heal into the bone before the crown goes on, and cases that need bone grafting take longer, as the graft heals first.

How long do implants last?

Well placed in healthy bone and maintained, 20 years and beyond is normal, with 90 to 95% still going at 15 years.

Can it be placed the same day as the extraction?

Sometimes. Immediate placement works best for front teeth with healthy bone and no infection. Your dentist confirms after assessment.

What if an implant fails?

Failure is rare, around 5 to 10% over 15 years. The fixture is removed, the site heals, and a replacement can usually be placed a few months later.
