A&E Warning Signs

Call 999 or go to A&E for swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, a swollen or painful eye or changes to vision, heavy mouth bleeding that will not stop, or serious injury to the face or jaw. Do not wait for a form reply or drive yourself.

Immediate Care

Contact a dentist for severe toothache, suspected infection or dental injury. If you cannot get urgent care, use NHS 111.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Hold the crown without touching the root. Rinse dirt off with milk, saline or saliva. If it slips back into place with gentle pressure, bite on a clean cloth. Otherwise keep it in milk or saliva in a container and seek a dentist at once. Never reinsert a baby tooth.

Swelling Or Abscess

Ask for an urgent dental appointment. An abscess needs treatment even if the pain eases. Use the A&E guidance above if swelling affects breathing, swallowing or the eye.

Bleeding After Extraction

Sit upright and bite on clean, damp gauze or a clean cloth for 20 minutes. Avoid rinsing or spitting. Contact a dentist if bleeding persists; heavy uncontrolled bleeding needs 999 or A&E.

Tooth Pain

If suitable for you, take paracetamol or ibuprofen according to the packet. A pharmacist can advise. Do not exceed the recommended dose or give aspirin to children under 16.

Urgent Dental Conditions

Your dentist will explain what can be treated at the visit and whether further care is needed.

Toothache

Severe or persistent toothache needs a dental assessment. The dentist checks the cause and explains the treatment options.

Dental Abscess

A suspected abscess needs urgent dental treatment. The dentist may recommend drainage, root canal treatment or extraction, depending on the cause.

Facial Or Gum Swelling

New or increasing swelling needs urgent advice. Breathing or swallowing difficulty, or swelling affecting your eye, needs 999 or A&E.

Broken Or Chipped Teeth

A broken tooth may need protection or repair, particularly if it hurts. Keep fragments in milk and bring them to the appointment.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A knocked-out adult tooth needs immediate dental attention. Call now and follow the first-aid steps above. Never reinsert a baby tooth.

Lost Fillings Or Crowns

Contact a dentist if a filling or crown comes out. Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side and bring it with you.

Wisdom-Tooth Pain

Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth needs assessment. The dentist can discuss treatment or referral after examining you.

Bleeding After Extraction

Bleeding that persists after pressure needs urgent advice. Call your treating practice or NHS 111; heavy bleeding that will not stop needs 999 or A&E.

Broken Dentures

Keep the pieces of a damaged denture and avoid household glue. Ask reception about assessment and repair arrangements.

Children's Dental Emergencies

Call for advice about tooth pain, swelling or an injured tooth. Tell reception the child’s age and whether it is a baby or adult tooth.

Call before travelling. Reception confirms the practice, appointment time and arrangements for your visit.

Emergency Appointment FAQs

How much do emergency dentists cost?

Call 020 8804 4320 for Enfield Smiles’ private emergency fee before booking. Reception will explain the appointment charge and the dentist will discuss treatment costs. NHS urgent treatment in England costs £27.90 for patients who pay NHS charges. Further treatment may cost more.

What qualifies for emergency dentist?

Severe toothache, suspected infection, dental injury and persistent bleeding need urgent advice. Call and describe your symptoms so the team can assess the next step. A knocked-out adult tooth needs immediate attention. Heavy uncontrolled bleeding or swelling affecting breathing or swallowing needs 999 or A&E.

Is a rotten tooth a dental emergency?

A decayed tooth needs urgent assessment if it causes severe pain, swelling or signs of infection. Decay without those symptoms still needs a dental appointment. Tell reception how long it has hurt and whether pain affects sleep or eating so they can advise on urgency.

What if I can't afford an emergency dentist?

Ask about NHS urgent care and whether you qualify for free treatment or help with charges. Explain the cost concern before booking a private appointment. If you cannot access urgent dental care, contact NHS 111 for advice. Reception can explain the route available at Enfield Smiles.

Can I find an emergency dentist on the NHS in Enfield?

You can ask an NHS dental practice for an urgent appointment or contact NHS 111 for advice. Availability depends on assessment and local capacity. Call Enfield Smiles to check the NHS route available for your situation; a private appointment request does not confirm an NHS booking.

How quickly can I get an emergency dental appointment?

Enfield Smiles keeps weekday urgent appointment capacity, but reception must assess your symptoms and confirm a time. Call 020 8804 4320 from 8:30am, Monday to Friday. For a knocked-out adult tooth, phone at once. If you cannot obtain urgent care, contact NHS 111 for advice.

What should I do if I need a dentist out of hours?

Call the practice and listen to the recorded message for current arrangements. If you cannot get urgent dental care, contact NHS 111. Enfield Smiles’ published weekday hours are 8:30am to 5pm. For breathing or swallowing difficulty, heavy uncontrolled bleeding or serious facial injury, use 999 or A&E.

Can I ask for help if I am nervous about dental treatment?

Yes. Tell reception that you feel anxious when requesting an appointment, and explain any past difficulty or concern. Ask the dentist to talk through the examination and options before treatment. Reception can check what support is available; do not assume sedation is included in an emergency appointment.
